Excerpts from the Latin Ballet of Virginia's production of EL DORADO. Scene of "The Amazon Warriors"
EL DORADO is perhaps a legendary place in South America. For centuries, people have looked for it and hundreds of lives have been lost to this dream. Their thirst was the unquenchable lust of gold; for a few of us, the hunger for something mystical, mythical, magical.
The myth began in the 1530s, in the Andes of present-day Colombia, where conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada first found the Muisca, a nation in the modern day highlands northern Bogota, Colombia, in 1537. Imagined as a place, El Dorado became a kingdom, an empire, the city of this legendary golden king. The legend soon reached Ecuador, Peru and Chile’s conquistadors and to the catholic kings of Spain.
“EL BESO DE LA ABEJA”, The Kiss of the Bee” celebrates the beauty of our planet and the value of bees to our livelihood.
