Impending Snow

Dear Friends & Familia,

As we all are aware, it is supposedly going to snow starting tonight. We are currently in a holding pattern regarding our production tomorrow. We will be keeping you up to date, but as for now, it is on with the show! The Cultural Arts Center of Glen Allen has assured us the roads and parking lot will be clear, but we are also aware that the conditions of your locations may vary.

We will have confirmed news by midnight tonight whether we will be cancelling or not. If we must cancel the show, be assured we are working on alternative options for ticket purchases. Please visit our website, social media or local news for more information as the evening progresses.

Thank you for your patience in this matter and we are keeping our fingers crossed that we will still be able to bring you our beautifully festive performance! If you need any further information feel free to contact us at 804.356.3876 or email us directly.

Gracias,

Latin Ballet: This isn't your abuela's ballet.

Hola!

One of the new things we are doing through the Latin Ballet of Virginia website is providing resources and knowledge of Latin American and Spanish traditions/customs/cultures. It is important as ambassadors of dance and culture to not only show you dance, but also to teach others where it all comes from and who we are as a community. As we progress through 2017, Latin Ballet of Virginia will showcase our dancers, our heritage, our students, our interests, and our community through dance and as a way for you all to get to know us a little better. We embrace the opportunity to share stories about who we are and educate others on where we come from.

A New Start with an Old Friend

by: Jo Ann Breaux

Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street...

That song was embedded in my little brain for my entire childhood. I hadn't revisited Sesame Street until a child came into my life. I remembered all the characters including the actual people on the show---Maria, Luis, Mr. Gordon, and Mr. Hooper. I also recall watching it every day in the lunch room in Kindergarten and it was on the day Heather Hayes decided to slap me across my 5 year old face. Shocked and confused, I just kept watching the Count and went about my business. At that time I had Sesame Street, Electric Company, 321 Contact and Zoom to keep me company when my parents were at work.

The wonderful thing about Sesame Street was not only was it teaching me pre-school skills, but it was teaching me about culture and language without me even knowing it. Growing up in a partially Latin family, it was comforting to hear these characters I grew to love, speaking and teaching the language of my heritage. I learned many Spanish words watching Sesame Street and the way the format was created, I effectively learned it. I grew up in a tri-lingual home, where I was not taught uno, deux, or any of the three languages my parents could speak. That's anotehr story for another time, which brings me to today.

Recently, I've been teaching Spanish vocabulary to my boyfriend's daughter. She is absorbing the language quite well at 3 years old and loves to ask me in Spanish, "Jo Ann, yo quiero jugo de manzana, por favor!" I was actually surprised at how well she asked for apple juice, but I'm more surprised she does it without thinking now. This weekend, I was playing some games on PBS Kids with my her and I mistakenly hit "Videos" while playing a Sesame Street game and was brought to an amazing discovery...Sesame Street is still teaching Spanish and it's also teaching the culture of Latin America and Spain. I'm sure this isn't news to all of you who have children, but for me, who hadn't watched the show since I was a little one, it was fantastic to see!

Sure, we have Dora, Manny, and Elena now, but Sesame Street has been around for ages and to me has been such a huge foundation in implementing not only a bi-lingual education, but a preservation of Latin and Spanish culture through educational television and now the internet. What's prize-winning about Sesame Street after all these years is that it holds the attention of children, and let's face it, kids are hard to keep focused. Not unlike, Latin Ballet, Sesame Street also caters to diversity, children's self-esteem and competency, as well as teaching them how to deal with real-life situations. I also have to say, it's still appealing to watch as an adult!

So, this is just a big shout out to PBS for staying consistent over all these years and really implementing different cultural experiences to children through language and education and because it so closely relates to what LBV strives to achieve. So, MUY BUENA, Sesame Street!

Here's what I'm referring to:

And for those of you who want a little blast from the past...

After 44 years on Sesame Street, veteran, Sonia Manzano's character, Maria was one of my favorites!

Hey you guys!!! Rita Moreno and her famous shout for Electric Company

From the second season, the opening credits of "The Bloodhound Gang" which were a series of short mysteries that aired as part of "3-2-1 Contact" on PBS.

Tonya's Story

Dancers Marisol Betancourt and Roberto Whitaker

Dancers Marisol Betancourt and Roberto Whitaker

Thanks to the successful efforts and collaboration of ArtoberVA and the Better Housing Coalition, we were humbled and ecstatic by this particular response and we wanted to take a moment to share. It is moments like this that make Latin Ballet of Virginia very proud and we thank CultureWorks for their continued support and collaboration.

This is Tonya's story.

During ArtoberVA we partnered with the Better Housing Coalition and a handful of artists to bring performances and collaborative arts experiences into neighborhoods historically underserved by arts and culture.

While planning a performance at BHC's Winchester Greens community in North Chesterfield with the Latin Ballet of Virginia, we learned that the Latin Ballet had offered a free dance workshop for the children there six years ago.

Through that workshop one young lady, "Tonya", discovered a new world that changed her life forever.

Tonya did not know cultural Hispanic music or dance. The free workshop changed Tonya's life. She fell in love with dance. Latin Ballet offered her a scholarship, and motivated by her new passion, she continued to dance, and discovered something more of herself and the world around her.

Recently Tonya performed on stage with the Latin Ballet of Virginia. She continues to embrace new experiences and is open to new possibilities for her future all because her world was changed by one arts and culture experience six years ago.

According to U.S Census, there are approximately 12,803 people who identify their ethnicity as Hispanic or Latino who live in RVA.

Did you know...

Artistic Director and Founder of Latin Ballet of Virginia, Ana I. King,  and her successful development of educational programs to teach students Spanish and English through dance and to use dance as therapy for children with special needs gave her an honorable place in Virginia Women in History this year.

Did you Also Know...

Latin Ballet of Virginia teaches a myriad of dance styles including hip-hop, contemporary, and traditional Latin/Spanish dances throughout the year.

Latin Ballet is not just a performing arts company. Latin Ballet is a multi-faceted, vibrant and accomplished family. As ambassadors of dance and culture, we strive to contribute to the growth of our community in RVA. We are proud of our educational programs, our dedicated instructors and artists who dance with and for us, and we are delighted that we have touched and helped so many through the art of dance.

students

A majority of the contributions we receive go directly to at-risk and low-income families. These funds allow these children to become a part of something special and provides a growth that exposes them to the arts, boosts their self-confidence and teaches them about the world they live in. Every student we touch is an achievement for the arts. We want to continue the success of educating through dance and culture, but we have many expenses throughout the year—all the things required for us to put on productions, give scholarships, the space we need for classes, costumes, the ability to be able to travel to schools and to pay our staff.  We love what we do and we hope you will join us this #GivingTuesday and help us make a difference.

'We were honored to have Latin Ballet of Virginia come to our school and so grateful for your generous support.  Many of the students at our school have never attended a live arts performance and for some, this was their very first exposure to the Arts.  Many of the students have never taken a dance class and I saw their self-confidence build before my eyes as they tried each dance step.  Many of the students were completely unfamiliar with Hispanic dance and culture and they learned so much about the history of Latin America and Spanish exploration through this tour.  These workshops and the performance by the Latin Ballet was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and eye-opening in so many ways for many of our students. "

— Rebecca Smith, Fluvanna County Schools

It's no secret that the holidays are for giving and it's no secret that this is a time we all need to stand together to give our children a better future. Feel free to check out our various educational programs.

Ana Ines Barragan King, Antonio Hidalgo Paz and the other dancers that accompanied them are truly Ambassadors of Culture. We are so fortunate to have them as part of our community in Central Virginia. What an honor! After the activity, as their teacher leading the event, I felt like I had spoken the language of the heart of the students for the first time in a very long time. They LONG for opportunities such as this! An incredible experience!
