The Latin Ballet of Virginia, the area’s pre-eminent Hispanic
American dance company, under the direction of Ana Ines King, is
proud to present , The barrio true stories of thousand
of migrants to the United States and the blessing, strength and
boundaries of Latin American families.
tells the story of the Puerto Rican people who migrated
to the United States mainly after World War II and the cultural
shock they experienced due to the enormous change after Puerto Rico
was declared a U.S. protectorate. From the post-war era until the
1960s, Puerto Ricans migrated to the mainland in a steady stream,
in search of jobs and better living conditions. The production will
depict the everyday life, their frustrations with relationships
and love, the sadness and difficulties they faced adapting to a
different culture, and their feelings of being strangers in strange
land. also captures the essence of their Spanish and African
roots - a culture that knows how to have a good time!
dances La Plena y La Bomba, Puerto Rican’s original music
and dance, as well as Mambos, Salsas, Latin Jazz and Hip Hop.

of are guest artists, including Richmond dance pioneer
Frances Wessells, Ram Baggat and his group of “Drums No Guns”
and drummer/composer Kevin Davis
